Khanya Primary School

At the end of 2005, Herne Hill School formed an allegiance with Khanya Primary School, a state school in Cape Town. Our aim has been to form long lasting links which not only support this desperately poor school but also provide benefits to our children such as making them more appreciative of the material comfort they enjoy and more aware of the world they live in.
Khanya was referred to us by School-Aid (www.school-aid.org), a UK based charity which also helps us with the shipment of collected goods to Khanya School in containers provided free of charge by Capespan, the South African fruit exporter. We are grateful for their help and the strong support by our parent association, the Friends of Herne Hill School.
Most recently, the relationship between our two schools strengthened significantly through the visit to Herne Hill School of Linda Mahote, Deputy Principal of Khanya School, during the entire month of June 2009. Linda spent time with all the classes and assisted the production of our year-end play, ‘The Lost Stories of Khanya’, written in house with music composed by our Music Director. She took back with her many impressions, learnings and friendships which will undoubtedly further bond our schools in the future.
