Our Ethos

“Herne Hill School for love, care and an excellent education” encapsulates our commitment to excellence and our conviction that love and care are prerequisites for a top quality education.

The school’s atmosphere lives this philosophy. It is a caring, friendly and fun place, and at the same time there is an air of achievement, respect and discipline. In addition, its co-ed nature and non-selective admissions policy in Nursery and Kindergarten enable us to build a wonderfully diverse community.

We celebrate this community bond in our Herne Hill School Song, which provides a good summary of the values we aim to convey to the children – particularly in the line “Be caring, think of others and work hard every day“.

Another good illustration of our values can be found in a poem by Kahlil Gibran, which is closely aligned to our philosophy for children and their development.

An important aspect of our “loving, caring, sharing” ethos is to make the children aware of their environment and place in the world. This includes raising their ecological awareness (e.g., by learning about our state of the art solar tiles on the roof of the Mulberry building), appreciating nature (e.g., in our Nature Area) and supporting the children of Khanya Primary School, our adopted sister in Cape Town/South Africa.

The parent association “Friends of Herne Hill School”, to which every parent belongs, actively contributes in these endeavours and helps bond the parent community through social activities.
